Summary content
In the middle of the economical depression, with governmental attempts to fight unemployment with public works Ivens made a film about the reclamation of the Zuiderzee near Amsterdam and the building of polders and dikes by unemployed workers. At that time these were the largest water works in the world. For this documentary Ivens used footage from his early film Zuiderzee and shot additional footage, to make a new version: New Earth. This film got a political message in the final sequence. Also the editing became more compact and stronger, sustained by the stirring music of German composer Hanns Eisler. After the part on the reclamation and the closing of the dyke the film continues with images of the economic crisis and the poverty among labourers. Ivens opposes this with the speculation on the market: those workers who helped to create new polders and land for agriculture welfare were fired after they finished the job, while grain is dumped at see to keep the prices up. The closing of the dyke is still one of the strongest editing sequences in the films of Joris Ivens.
