Summary content
The first film Joris Ivens made after he returned from Eastern Europe, at that time behind the Iron Curtain, to Western Europe. Inspired by a photo series of Henri Cartier-Bresson about the river Seine Joris Ivens created a film poem about Paris and Parisian life on the borders of the Seine river. The film adapts to the flow of the river winding its way through the city, presenting small visual anecdotes and themes of people living, strolling, sun-bathing, fishing, working, swimming, loving and laughing near the Seine. The poem written by Jacques Prévert gives the film an extra dimension, and the music, with the recurring theme of a children song, gives it a melancholic touch.

Reviews

Bob J. Bertina: 'The film is one fluid movement of images that captures everyone observed by Ivens on the banks of the Seine in one loving gesture, they are the workers, the clochards, the lovers, the lonely, the children, the fishermen. Ivens does not only shown us his love for Paris but also his undisturbed artistry.' (Dutch newspaper "de Volkskrant", Wednesday 24 June 1959)
