Literature

Cees Nooteboom (born 1933) debuted in 1955 and has since built up an imposing oeuvre of novels, poetry, short stories and travelogues. His work earned him numerous awards, among which the Bordewijk Prize an the (American) Pegasus Prize for Rituelen (Rituals, 1980) and the Aristeion European Prize for Literature for Het volgende verhaal (The Following Story, 1991). The latter was translated into over twenty languages and signalled his international breakthrough. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Prize for Dutch Letters for his entire oeuvre. The jury describes this oeuvre as profound and philosophical and regards these qualities as the reason why Nooteboom’s oeuvre is so esteemed abroad. In 2010 he was awarded the German Konrad Adenauer Prize. His books translated into Chinese include the novels All Souls’ Day (both Yillin Press) and his world-famaus travelogue Roads to Santiago, published by Flower City Publishing House.
