1898
On 17 June Maurits Cornelis Escher born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.

1919-22
Attends the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. Greatest influence is his teacher, graphic artist Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita.
就读于哈勒姆建筑与装饰艺术学校。深受其老师、绘画艺术家Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita的影响。

1921
In the spring, a holiday trip through the South of France and Northern Italy. In the years that follow trips on foot through inhospitable regions of Italy.

1922
Trip through Northern Italy in the spring. In the summer by freighter to Spain, where he travels by train and on foot.
In Granada, Spain Escher visits the Alhambra. Return by freighter to Italy and spends a long period in Siena from mid-November onwards.

In March meets Jetta Umiker in Ravello (Italy), she becomes his girlfriend.
From 13 to 26 August his first solo exhibition in Siena.
Moves to Rome in November.

1924
In February his first exhibition in the Netherlands is held in an art gallery in The Hague.
On 12 June he marries Jetta Umiker in Viaréggio. Wedding attended by the couple’s parents.

Escher buys an apartment in Rome.

Makes yearly, mostly in the spring, trips on foot through inhospitable regions.

July 4, moves to Switzerland.

From April till May makes a long trip by sea from Italy to Spain.
Study and once again copies the Arabic mosaics  in the Alhambra the Moorish castle in Granada and the mosaics in the Mezquita (church) in Códoba.

Moves to Brussels, Belgium with the family.

Major exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam on the occasion of the International Mathematical Congress.

Early in the year Escher’s book Regelmatige vlakverdeling (The Regular Division of the Plane) is published.

In August exhibition and lecture in Cambridge (United Kingdom) during an international conference of crystallographers. August 29 till October 14: sea voyage to Canada. Lecture at MIT in Cambridge, Massechusetts (USA).

Article on Escher by art historian E.H. Gombrich in the Saturday Evening Post of  29 July.

In April Escher is admitted to hospital for an emergency operation; he takes a long time to recover.

March 5, Escher is awarded the cultural prize of the city of Hilversum.
In August Symmetry Aspects of M.C. Escher’s Periodic Drawings by Professor Dr. Caroline H. MacGillavry is published.

1968
First retrospective to mark his seventieth birthday in the Gemeentemuseum The Hague.

1969
On 20 February Metamorphose III, a wall painting 42 metres long, is unveiled in the main post office in The Hague. (It now hangs in Lounge 4 at Schiphol Airport).
In July Escher completes his last graphic work, the woodcut Snakes.

In August he moves to the Rosa Spier House in Laren.

On 27 March Escher dies in the Diakonessenhuis hospital in Hilversum.
