July 26 2010 Caroline Treur
On Friday and Saturday night, Dutch Culture Center presented a collection of classical masterpieces to audience in Shanghai. The concert was performed by international musicians as compitition winners in the Netherlands, namely Vitaly Pisarenko (piano), Falko Hönisch (baritone), the Heath Quartet (string quartet) and Yi-Ping Yang (percussion), from Russia, Germany, England and China, respectively.
After a short introduction by Edwin Rutten, the first part of the concert started with piano solo by Vitaly Pisarenko, the first prize winner of the 8th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition (2008), and followed by the Heath Quartet from the Great Britain. Artists gave impressive performances and were shortly interviewed by the host Edwin. Second half of the concert began with a stunning performance by a Chinese percussionist Yi-Ping Yang. The unique style of her mask-wearing performance was inspirited by elements from Asian opera, and the integration of her instruments provided a breath-taking show to the whole theatre. Maybe also for her Chinese originality, she received warm applause by the audience. Afterwards, the German baritone Falko Hönisch presented with his bright intonation, co-operated with Vitaly. End show was a Chinese song played by all the musicians, Jiao Wo Ru He Bu Xiang Ta, meaning how can I not miss her. The audience were invited to sing along with the music. For the whole night, everybody was enjoying the great performance.
Programmes on Saturday had some variations. Musicians combined their performances with others and provided an acoustical blast. It was also the 23rd birthday of the young pianist Vitaly Pisarenko, and all the audience sang him a happy birthday song in Chinese.
For two nights, Dutch Culture Center was surrounded by music and the great atmosphere created by the young promising musicians. Probably the most inspirational highlight for the two-day music concert would be as the percussionist Yi-Ping Yang said during the short interview at the concert, "I will always be true to myself, to my music, and to my audience."
