Presentation of Dutch literature at the Shanghai World Expo 2010

During its final week, the Dutch Culture Centre will open its doors to Café Amsterdam, a literary café where Dutch and Chinese authors will meet on stage.

In 2011, the Netherlands will be guest-of-honour at the Beijing International Book Fair. The Netherlands will present itself as a small, but very dynamic country with a rich cultural life. In recent years, Chinese publishers and readers have discovered that part of this cultural wealth consists of vibrant and highly interesting literature, and many Chinese publishing houses are now presenting Dutch authors – not only of contemporary fiction, but also of children’s literature, literary classics, non-fiction and poetry.

The Café Amsterdam programme in Shanghai will be an interesting preview of the presentation in Beijing in 2011. Three prominent Dutch authors will take the stage and read to a Chinese audience, along with several of their Chinese colleagues: Cees Nooteboom (All Souls' Day & Rituals, Yilin Press, 2008), Margriet de Moor (The Drowned, Shanghai Literature and Arts, 2010) and Anna Enquist (The Masterpiece, Shanghai Literature and Arts, 2009).
